What is hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, is when your thyroid gland makes more hormone than your body needs. This speeds up many body functions, including your heart rate.

Hyperthyroidism in your reports

A thyroid profile usually shows a low TSH, because the brain stops signalling an already overactive thyroid, with high T4 or T3. Each lab prints its own reference range.

Hyperthyroidism: when your thyroid gland makes more hormone than your body needs.

Why hyperthyroidism matters

Left untreated, an overactive thyroid can lead to heart rhythm problems, thinning bones and osteoporosis, and period or fertility problems.

Common signs are:

  • weight loss even though you're eating more
  • a fast or uneven heartbeat
  • nervousness, irritability and trouble sleeping
  • shaky hands, sweating and feeling hot
  • frequent bowel movements

In older adults it can look quieter, like poor appetite or withdrawal. The most common cause is Graves' disease. Women and people over 60 are more likely to get it.

What helps with hyperthyroidism

Treatment comes from your doctor, and food supports it.

What you can do:

  • Avoid seaweed and iodine supplements, and check cough syrups and multivitamins for iodine, as extra iodine can make it worse.
  • Because an overactive thyroid can thin your bones, keep calcium-rich foods like milk, dahi, ragi and til in your daily meals.
  • Eat enough to stop unwanted weight loss.
  • Stop smoking if you smoke, since nicotine use is a risk factor.
