What is T3?

T3, or triiodothyronine, is one of the two main hormones your thyroid gland makes. It is the more active form and helps control how your body uses energy.

T3 on your report

Indian reports may show total T3 or free T3 (FT3), often in ng/dL or pg/mL.

  • Each lab sets its own range.
  • Some medicines and supplements can affect the result.
  • Your doctor will read it alongside TSH and T4.

Want the numbers? TSH normal range for women, including pregnancy.

What T3 tells your doctor

T3 affects your weight, heart rate, body temperature, muscle strength and mood.

Doctors usually read it together with TSH and T4.

  • A high T3 can point to an overactive thyroid.
  • A low T3 can point to an underactive one.
  • A normal T3 on its own does not rule out a thyroid problem, which is why it is rarely tested alone.

What moves your T3

Thyroid problems are treated by your doctor, and food cannot fix a hormone imbalance.

What you can do is support your overall health:

  • eat regular balanced meals with protein at each one
  • include vegetables, fruit and whole grains
  • use iodised salt in normal amounts
  • move every day
  • protect your sleep

If you want to lose weight, slow and steady changes are easier to keep up than crash diets. Certain medicines and supplements can affect T3, so tell your doctor what you take.
