What is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, is when the thyroid gland in your neck doesn't make enough thyroid hormone. Because this hormone sets the pace of how your body uses energy, many body functions slow down.

Hypothyroidism in your reports

It is usually picked up on a thyroid profile.

In hypothyroidism:

  • TSH is high, because your brain is pushing a sluggish thyroid to work harder.
  • T4 may be low.

Labs print their own TSH range, which varies, so read your value against your report.

Why hypothyroidism matters

It is much more common in women and in people over 60. Symptoms creep in slowly and are easy to blame on age or stress:

  • tiredness, weight gain and feeling cold
  • joint and muscle aches
  • dry skin and thinning hair
  • heavy or irregular periods
  • a slow heart rate and low mood

The most common cause is Hashimoto's disease, where the immune system attacks the thyroid. Because these symptoms are so common, only a blood test can confirm it.

What helps with hypothyroidism

Medicine prescribed by your doctor is the main treatment, and food works around it.

Your doctor may advise taking thyroid medicine in the morning before eating, so ask how long to wait before your chai or breakfast.

Everyday habits:

  • Eat regular balanced meals with protein, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Use iodised salt in normal amounts.
  • Avoid seaweed or iodine supplements unless your doctor advises them.

Regular activity and good sleep help with the tiredness and weight.
