What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone that both men and women make, though women make much smaller amounts. In both, it helps with sex drive and supports muscle and bone strength.

Testosterone on your report

Your report may show total testosterone, and sometimes free testosterone, which is the part not attached to proteins.

  • The sample is usually taken in the morning, when levels are highest.
  • Ranges differ by lab, age and test method, so compare your result with the range printed on your own report.

What testosterone tells your doctor

In women, a testosterone level that runs high is one of the signs doctors look for in PCOS.

High testosterone can show up as:

  • extra facial or body hair
  • acne
  • thinning hair on the scalp
  • a deeper voice
  • irregular or missed periods

It can also make it harder to get pregnant.

Very low levels in women can sometimes point to a problem with the adrenal glands, pituitary or ovaries, so your doctor always reads the number alongside your symptoms.

What moves your testosterone

In PCOS, high insulin can push the ovaries to make more testosterone, so anything that steadies your blood sugar helps over time.

On your plate:

  • Build meals around dal, vegetables and whole grains like jowar or bajra.
  • Add some protein at each meal.
  • Cut back on sugary snacks and maida-based foods.

Habits that all help:

  • regular walking
  • some strength work
  • steady sleep
  • gradual weight loss if you're carrying extra weight

If your doctor suggests medicine, follow that alongside your food changes.
