PCOS vs PCOD: the difference, in plain words

PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease) is a name widely used in India for the hormone condition that doctors elsewhere call PCOS. The older name focuses on the ovaries, while PCOS, and the newer name PMOS, describe it as a whole-body hormone and metabolic condition.

PCOD in your reports

An ultrasound report may say 'polycystic ovarian morphology' or 'bulky ovaries with multiple follicles'. That finding alone doesn't confirm the condition; your doctor also looks at your periods and hormone tests.

Why PCOD matters

You may read online that PCOD is a milder, separate condition from PCOS, but in everyday practice in India the two words are often used for the same thing.

What matters more than the label is your features:

  • irregular periods
  • signs of high male-type hormones like acne and excess hair
  • polycystic-looking ovaries on a scan

You don't need cysts to have it. It is linked with insulin resistance, which raises your long-term risk of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic problems, so it's worth taking seriously.

What helps with PCOD

The same food and lifestyle steps help whichever name your report uses.

On your plate:

  • Build meals around dal, sabzi, salad and a smaller portion of roti or rice.
  • Choose millets like jowar, bajra and ragi often.
  • Keep mithai and fried snacks for occasions.

Day to day:

  • Move every day.
  • Add strength exercise a few times a week.
  • Keep regular sleep hours.

If you're carrying extra weight, losing some can help your hormones and periods.
