LH:FSH ratio on your report
Indian reports often show LH and FSH separately in mIU/mL, and some print the ratio too.
There is no single agreed cut-off; it varies with the lab's test method. So your doctor will read it with:
- your symptoms
- ultrasound
- other results
LH:FSH ratio: the LH:FSH ratio compares two hormones from your brain that control your ovaries, luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone.
What the LH:FSH ratio tells your doctor
In many women with PCOS, LH runs high compared with FSH, so the ratio goes up.
A study of 267 women found:
- the average ratio was about 0.7 in women without PCOS and about 1.25 in women with PCOS
- a higher ratio went along with insulin resistance and more follicles
But the authors concluded the ratio is useful and not diagnostic: many women with PCOS have a normal ratio.
What helps more than chasing the ratio
You do not need to chase the ratio itself. In PCOS, the habits that improve insulin sensitivity are what matter:
- meals built around dal, vegetables, whole grains and enough protein
- fewer sweets, sugary chai and maida snacks
- regular walking and strength exercise
- slow weight loss if needed
- good sleep
These often help periods become more regular. Any hormone treatment is for your gynaecologist to decide.
