What fasting blood sugar tells your doctor
Fasting blood sugar is one of the main tests doctors use to spot prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
How it works:
- When you are fasting, your liver releases a little sugar and insulin keeps it in check.
- If this number keeps creeping up, it can be an early sign that insulin is not working as well as it should, which is called insulin resistance.
What moves your fasting blood sugar
A lighter, earlier dinner with protein and vegetables, rather than a late heavy plate of rice or rotis, often helps the morning number.
These all improve how your body handles sugar overnight:
- regular activity
- a short walk after dinner
- steady weight loss if you carry extra weight around the waist
- seven to eight hours of sleep
Stress and poor sleep can push it up. If you are on diabetes medicine, any changes should be planned with your doctor.
