Postmenopause: the stage of life that starts once you've gone a full year without a period, and it lasts for the rest of your life.
Life after menopause
It starts on average around age 52, though timing varies.
For some years, many women still have milder:
- hot flushes or night sweats
- sleep problems
- vaginal dryness
- low mood or weight changes
With less oestrogen, bone density falls faster, raising your fracture risk, and heart disease risk climbs, especially with high cholesterol, high blood pressure or less activity.
Bleeding after menopause is not normal and should always be checked by your doctor.
What helps after menopause
Calcium-rich foods like dahi, milk, paneer, ragi, til and green leafy vegetables help protect your bones, and fruits, vegetables, dal, lean protein and whole grains support your heart.
Go easy on salt, sugar and alcohol.
Other habits:
- Walking, yoga and strength training help bones, muscles, weight and mood.
- Don't smoke.
- Keep long-term conditions like diabetes in check.
- Stay socially active.
Ask your doctor before starting calcium or vitamin D supplements.
Check-ups after menopause
Your doctor may suggest a bone density scan, mammograms and other routine check-ups at this stage, along with blood tests for cholesterol and sugar.
