Bloating: when your tummy feels full, tight and uncomfortable, and it may look swollen too.
Why bloating matters
Most bloating is harmless and eases with simple changes, but it can spoil your day.
NHS lists common causes:
- wind from certain foods or from swallowing air while eating
- constipation
- IBS
- food intolerances
- coeliac disease
Many women also feel bloated around their period.
Bloating that won't go away should be checked by a doctor, especially with:
- weight loss
- blood in your stool
Occasionally it can be a sign of something more serious, such as ovarian cancer.
What helps with bloating
Eat smaller meals more often, chew with your mouth closed and don't rush. Drink enough water and stay active.
- Cut down on fizzy drinks, alcohol and caffeine.
- Avoid large, heavy meals late at night.
- Avoid any food you know you're intolerant to.
Gas-forming foods like cabbage, beans and lentils can bloat some people, so smaller portions of rajma or chole may suit you better.
If constipation is behind it, soluble fibre such as oats or linseed can help.
